Spatholobus Suberectus stem extract for Skin and Body

Spatholobus suberectus belongs to the family Leguminosae used for the management of several disorders such as rheumatism, anemia, and abnormal menstruation traditionally in China. A reported study suggested that several compounds like butin, liquiritigenin, dihydroquercetin, plathymenin, eriodictyol, and neoisoliquiritigenin were been isolated from the stem of Spatholobus suberectus. A study on stem extract of Spatholobus suberectus effectively manages cerebral ischemia by attenuating NF-κΒ p65 and cytokines and thereby prevents DNA damage. What are the benefits of Spatholobus suberectus stem extract?

• Photoprotective and anti-aging effect: in a study, Spatholobus suberectus (SS) stem extract suppressed ultraviolet (UV)-induced photo-aging. The major active components of SS stem extracts were identified as gallic acid, vanillic acid, catechin, syringic acid, and epicatechin. The aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the stem of SS significantly reduced the elastase enzyme activity. Moreover, both extracts suppressed the ROS generation and cellular damage induced by UVB in HaCaT cells. The results also revealed that SSE could regulate the expression of MMPs, collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1), tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, elastin (ELN), and hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2) at their transcriptional and translational level.

• Can be used for the treatment of pancreatitis: a study suggests that treatment with SS alone effectively manages the pancreatitis by ceasing the inflammatory pathway. Moreover, SS in combination with heparin gives the synergistic effect as in combination it acts on inflammatory and coagulation pathways simultaneously for pancreatitis.

• Other pharmacological properties: anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-platelet activity.

• Can be used for glioma treatment: A study wanted to examine the anticancer effect of a high-pressure hot-water SS extract on rat C6 glioma cells. The SS extract effectively suppressed the viability and proliferation of C6 glioma cells through an antioxidant effect. All these data support the fact that the high-pressure hot-water SS extract has the potential to be used for glioma treatment.

• Used for the treatment of breast cancer: there are studies showing that Spatholobus suberectus stem extract can be used for the treatment of breast cancer.
