Anemarrhena Asphodeloides root extract for Skin and Body
Anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract have been used in traditional medicine as an antidiabetic, antipyretic, and antidepressant in China, Japan, and Korea. It is also used to treat febrile disease in clinical practice in China.
What are the benefits of using Anemarrhena Asphodeloides root extract for the skin and body?
- Photoprotective and anti-aging: the TA‐III present in Anemarrhena Asphodeloides root extract could provide protection against photoaging and it was found that daily application of TA‐III for 12 weeks significantly reduced signs of facial aging by limiting wrinkle formation.
- Eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles: the water extract of Anemarrhena asphodeloides, mediated the eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Aa-AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (Aa-AuNPs). A. asphodeloides root extract is a medicinal plant and the nanoparticles produced from is also expected to possess similar therapeutic properties. Furthermore, both Aa-Ag/AuNPs were evaluated for cytotoxicity towards colon cancer (HT29), pre-adipocyte (3T3-L1), lung adenocarcinoma (A549), and breast cancer (MCF7). A549 cell line was the most sensitive to Aa-AuNPs treatment and the MCF7 cell line to Aa-AgNPs treatment. Also, Aa-AuNPs had shown the potential to be used as an anticancer agent during lung cancer treatment. Additionally, Aa-AgNPs exhibited the potential to also inhibit cell migration. Further experiments are required to confirm the plausible anti-cancer effect and the mechanism associated with it for both, Aa-Au/AgNPs.
- Skin whitening effect: In a study in particular, at 25 μg/mL concentration, melanin biosynthesis was more effectively inhibited by anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract (28.4%) than arbutin (24.7%; a well-known melanin synthesis inhibitor). In clinical trials, the changes in human skin brightness values over eight weeks using a cream formulation that contained 2% anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract after inducing pigmentation via ultraviolet irradiation. The melanin index, hyperpigmentation degree, and skin brightness were significantly improved. This shows that anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract is expected to become widely available as a functional cosmetic material for skin whitening.
- Other pharmacological properties: it is also used as an antidiabetic, antipyretic, and antidepressant.
