CARNAÚBA in Cosmetics
The carnauba palm (Copernicia Prunifera) is mainly found in the states of Ceará, Piauí, and Rio Grande do Norte. The leaves of this plan are covered with a layer of wax which protects it against heavy droughts by reducing the loss of water by evapotranspiration.
The wax powder is extracted from the leaves without attacking and preserving the integrity of the palms. The leaves are then dried in the sun and then beat to separate the wax from the leaves.
Carnauba wax is a natural wax and consists mainly of esters and long-chain saturated fatty acids such as carnauba acid, ceratin, and saturated hydrocarbons.
How is CARNAÚBA used in cosmetics and what are its benefits?
- Carnauba wax is used as an additive in lipsticks to achieve greater stability even at higher temperatures.
- It is used in waterproof make-up as it forms a water-resistant film, thus avoiding the spill of makeup.
- Also in water-resistant sunscreens.
- This natural wax is also used in hair care products and skin care. The hair gets stronger and brighter and it also gives the skin more elasticity.
