Akebia Quinata extract for Skin and Body

Akebia quinata extract is a herb that has been used to treat urinary tract inflammatory diseases in traditional Korean and Chinese medicines.

What are the benefits of using Akebia Quinata extract for the skin and body?

  • Antioxidant and Antiglycation activities: the accumulation of free radicals and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the skin can increase skin aging. Both are known to interact with each other. Therefore, natural extracts that possess both antioxidant and antiglycation activities might have great anti-aging potential. In a study, akebia quinata extract was demonstrated to possess antioxidant and antiglycation activity. Akebia quinata extract protects human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) from oxidative stress and inhibits cellular senescence induced by oxidative stress. It was found that akebia quinata extract inhibits the glycation reaction between BSA and glucose. the possibility of the extract as an anti-skin aging agent was also clinically validated. Our analysis of the crow’s feet wrinkle showed that there was a decrease in the depth of deep furrows in RI treated with akebia quinata extract cream over an eight-week period. These results suggest that akebia quinata extract may work as an anti-skin aging agent by preventing oxidative stress and other complications associated with AGEs formation.
  • Antiobesity and hypolipidemic effects: there are studies suggesting that akebia quinata extract exerted antiobesity and hypolipidemic effects in mice consuming a high-fat diet by regulating adipogenesis and fatty acid oxidation via AMPK activation.
  • Hepatoprotective: there are studies suggesting that akebia quinata extract has a protective effect against alcoholic liver damage and treats it.
  • Anti-diuretic effect: A. quinata extract might be an effective diuretic in the treatment of hypertension by increasing diuresis and reducing heart rate without any particular side effects.
  • Neuroprotective effect: The A. quinata extract has neuroprotective properties that can help with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy.
  • Anti-inflammatory: it also has anti-inflammatory properties that calm redness or irritation on the skin.
  • Anti-apoptotic: A. quinata extract can prevent apoptosis (a type of cell death).
